ESRD Celebrates 30 Years in Numerical Simulation Excellence

August 1, 2019 News, S.A.F.E.R. Simulation

ESRD was founded in 1989 to bring S.A.F.E.R. Simulation to engineers around the globe.

A message from the President and CEO:

ESRD President and CEO Dr. Ricardo Actis

ESRD was founded 30 years ago by Barna Szabó, Kent Myers and Ivo Babuška with the mission to create and market software tools for the advancement of the quality, reliability and timeliness of information that serves engineering decision-making processes.

ESRD’s flagship product is StressCheck Professional, an advanced finite element analysis (FEA) tool with roots in supporting the analysis of complex Aerospace & Defense industry applications.

Thanks to our world class team of engineers and software developers, we have been able to field a product that is not like any other finite element analysis software.  It is the only FEA software at present that meets the technical requirements of simulation governance.

When asked: In what way is StressCheck different from other finite element analysis software products? I answer: StressCheck supports numerical simulation, other FEA products support finite element modeling. This usually leads to interesting conversations about why finite element modeling is not numerical simulation, contrary to many advertising slogans, and why smart applications must be subject to the rules of simulation governance.

I thank our customers for recognizing the value in what we provide and for appreciating the importance of quality assurance in numerical simulation. I thank them for having placed their confidence in us.

I thank our employees for their dedication and hard work which made these 30 years possible and I look forward to continued success in the coming years as more and more thought leaders come to realize what our customers already know: We empower our customers to get reliable solutions for their numerical simulation problems.

Ricardo L. Actis
President and CEO
ESRD, Inc.

On August 2nd, ESRD celebrated the occasion with an employee luncheon and an address by ESRD Co-Founder and Chairman Dr. Barna Szabó. Here are a few images from the celebration:

What Bottlenecks Limit the Adoption of Simulation Governance?

Oct 3, 2019

While the idea of simulation governance may be easy to understand, the challenges of two potential bottlenecks must be addressed before it can adopted by engineering management. Read Dr. Barna Szabo's latest S.A.F.E.R. simulation post to learn more.

Certification by Analysis (CbA) – Are We There Yet?

Certification by Analysis (CbA) – Are We There Yet?

Mar 7, 2024

Certification by Analysis (CbA) uses validated computer simulations to demonstrate compliance with regulations, replacing some traditional physical tests. CbA allows for exploring a wide range of design scenarios, accelerates innovation, lowers expenses, and upholds rigorous safety standards. The key to CbA is reliability. This means that the data generated by numerical simulation should be as trustworthy as if they were generated by carefully conducted physical experiments. To achieve that goal, it is necessary to control two fundamentally different types of error; the model form error and the numerical approximation error, and use the models within their domains of calibration.

Testimonials

  • “The p-type element has been used to great advantage in the finite element system ESRD StressCheck, [26]. This software provides the engineer with the means to conduct solution verification in an extremely straightforward manner by simply increasing the degree of the element, monitoring convergence and using Richardson extrapolation reliably to estimate the error. This can be conducted automatically by the software thereby enabling the engineer to concentrate on the engineering rather than the simulation. StressCheck has also been used to develop ESRD’s Handbook and Toolbox applications. The first of these provides engineers with a repository of parameterised standard problems of the type found in texts like Roark’s “Formulas for Stress and Strain”, [27]. The second, Toolbox, is a tool that can be used to parameterise a company’s range of components for rapid and reliable analysis by non-expert analysis. Toolbox then is an exemplary of the way in which the democratisation of simulation can be applied.”

Testimonials

“In the case of the through crack configuration, the comparison of experimental and StressCheck derived geometry factors showed a close correlation and were an improvement to solutions provided in AFGROW at the time. Based on the results of this research, StressCheck pin-loaded lug geometry factors have since been incorporated into the AFGROW software.”
